Mobility

Montreal's public transportation system is run by the state-owned Société de Transport de Montréal (STM). The system integrates the metro and bus lines: you can buy a monthly pass and use the system as much as you want. With just one pass, you can take one bus trip and then another on the metro, as long as the second trip is within the one and a half hour (1h30) window. A good option is to buy an Opus card (costing C$6 dollars), and then carry the pass without having to print anything. There is an app called MonTransit that shows the timetables of the bus lines that pass by your stop. Google Maps also shows route options using public transportation, including the metro, train and bus.

In Quebec, Gatineau, Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières, the car is more important because the frequency of bus lines leaves much to be desired, as does the time spent waiting for a bus, especially if the journey involves more than one line. Even in Laval, car use is heavy, because there are few bus lines and their frequency is very low. In addition, the three metro stations cover a limited area of the city, serving mainly those heading to Montreal. The same thing happens in the Rive-sud, which is why there are ample parking spaces in the shopping centers in these areas.

Subway

The architecture of each metro station is unique, as it is usually designed by a different architect. The city's metro system is internationally renowned for this reason, as are the underground galleries in the city center. In Montreal, the bus and metro systems are integrated, and it is possible to buy a monthly pass that gives you unlimited bus and metro travel. Although both Laval and Longueuil have metro stations, the monthly pass for those who live in these areas is more expensive. In Laval, there are three metro stations, while in Longueuil there is only one station, and in both cities there is no free connection between buses and the metro, as there is in Montreal.

You can buy tickets with unlimited travel from 6pm until the metro closes. Students under 25 are entitled to a discount on the pass, but the regular fare, both for the monthly pass and the individual ticket, is more expensive. You can take the bus to several cities and districts in the region: for example, it doesn't take long to get from Bonaventure station to the city of Brossard, on the south bank of the Saint-Laurent River.

Ciclovias e BIXI
