Regime
Political parties
Parties in Canada are not organized vertically as they are in Brazil. Here, parties are restricted to the federal, provincial and municipal spheres, if applicable. In Toronto, there are no parties in municipal elections, even if candidates are aligned with provincial or federal parties. At the federal level, there are five official parties: the Liberal Party of Canada, the Conservative Party, the New Democratic Party, the Bloc Québecois and the Green Party. At the provincial level in Quebec, the parties are: Parti Liberal du Québec, Coalition pour l'Avenir du Quebec (CAQ), Parti Québecois and Québec Solidaire. In Montreal, unlike Toronto, there are municipal parties, but there are also independent councillors. The parties in Montreal are Ensemble Montréal, Équipe Anjou, Équipe Barbe Team and Projet Montréal - the team of current mayor Valérie Plante.
The administrative structure of the city of Montreal includes an executive committee chosen from among the city councillors, as well as neighborhood councils such as the conseil d'arrondissement and the conseil d'agglomération. The municipal council, what we call in Brazil the Câmara Municipal, is the main decision-making body of the city of Montreal. It is composed of 65 elected representatives: the mayor of Montreal, who is also the mayor of the city of Ville-Marie (downtown Montreal), plus 18 mayors of municipalities such as Plateau Mont-Royal, Verdun, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, among others; and 46 city councillors. Each administrative region of Quebec has its own councils, committees, agencies, etc. Find out more about the administrative structure of your region.
